FTL (full truck load) means one customer books a whole truck and pays for the truck regardless of how full it is. PTL (part truck load, also called LTL or part load) means several customers share a truck and each pays for the space or weight they use.

Full load is simpler: one bilty, one consignor and consignee pair, and a rate per truck or per ton for the route. Part load needs more paperwork because one truck carries several consignments, each with its own bilty and often its own delivery point, and the broker earns by filling the truck with consignments from different parties. Charges for part load are usually by weight, packages or volume, with a minimum charge. Delivery takes longer because of consolidation and multiple stops. Note that each consignment still needs its own bilty and, above the value limit, its own e-way bill.
