Freight basis is how the freight is worked out: a fixed amount for the whole trip, a rate per ton or per quintal of goods, or a rate per kilogram, package or km. The basis is agreed before the trip and changes how the final bill is calculated.

With a fixed basis the freight is the same whatever the weight within the truck's capacity, which suits full-truck bookings. With a per-ton or per-quintal basis the freight is the rate times the net weight, so the weighbridge slip decides the bill: 1 ton is 1,000 kg and 1 quintal is 100 kg, so a per-quintal rate is one tenth of the equivalent per-ton rate per unit. Per-package and per-kg bases are common in part loads.
