A credit note is a document a supplier issues to reduce an earlier invoice, for example when part of the freight is cancelled, a rate was charged too high or a shortage is deducted. It reduces what the party owes and, under GST, adjusts the tax on the original invoice.

In transport billing, credit notes come up when the party agrees a deduction after delivery: a shortage or damage claim accepted, a halting charge waived, a rate difference corrected. Do not edit or delete the original invoice; issue a credit note that refers to it, with its own serial number. Under section 34 a credit note must be issued within the time allowed by the Act, so do not leave it to the end of the year. The tax effect depends on the facts, and an error here affects both your return and the party's credit, so check with your CA. If the amount increases instead, a debit note is issued.
