Freight Advance & Balance Freight
Also searched as: freight advance meaning · balance freight meaning · advance freight · trip advance · advance and balance in transport · baaki bhada
Freight advance is the part of the freight paid before or at dispatch, often to cover diesel and toll. Balance freight is what remains after the advance, paid on delivery or after the proof of delivery. Balance = total freight minus advance, adjusted for any agreed deductions or extras such as shortage or halting.
Detailed Explanation & Statutory Rules
In road transport a truck owner needs cash at the start: diesel, toll, driver expenses. So the full freight is rarely paid in one go. The part paid up front is the freight advance (also called advance freight or trip advance); what is left is the balance freight (also called balance or "baaki").
There are two sides to this and both use the same words. The party advances money to the broker or transporter when booking; and the broker advances money to the truck owner or driver for the trip, keeping the rest to pay after delivery. Brokers often depend on the first advance to finance the second.
The balance is usually released on delivery, or after the signed proof of delivery (POD) reaches the office, which is why POD is collected promptly. The simple formula is: balance = total freight − advance − agreed deductions + agreed extras. Deductions can be shortage or damage claims; extras can be hamali or halting. Write the advance and the balance terms on the booking and the hire slip so that both sides know the date and condition for the balance.
On a To Pay bilty the consignee pays the freight at delivery, so an advance already taken from the consignor is deducted and only the balance is collected at the destination. Record every advance with the date, the amount, the mode (cash, UPI, bank) and who received it, because disputes at the end are usually about what was already paid.
Advances to a truck owner are also the amounts you reconcile against the lorry-hire payment and, where TDS applies, against the amount deducted on the total.
Practical Indian Freight Example
"For illustration: freight for a Rajkot to Delhi load is agreed at ₹60,000. The party pays ₹20,000 advance at booking. The broker gives the truck owner ₹30,000 advance for diesel and toll. On delivery with signed POD, ₹4,000 shortage is deducted and ₹3,000 halting is added. Balance freight from the party is 60,000 − 20,000 − 4,000 + 3,000 = ₹39,000."

There is no fixed share. It is by agreement and depends on the trip, mostly enough to cover diesel and toll. Write the amount and the balance terms on the hire slip.
