Hamali means the labour charge for loading goods onto a truck and unloading them. In English it is porterage or loading and unloading labour charges; in Hindi, हमाली is the मज़दूरी paid to the हमाल who lifts and stacks the goods. It is normally not part of the truck freight unless agreed.
Detailed Explanation & Statutory Rules
Hamali is the money paid to the labourers (hamals) who physically lift goods onto a truck at the start and lift them off at the end. The word is used in Hindi, Gujarati and Marathi; in English paperwork you will see "loading charges", "unloading charges", "porterage" or "labour". In parts of Maharashtra the same workers are called mathadi.
Hamali is separate from freight. Freight pays for moving the goods from A to B; hamali pays for handling them at the two ends. Unless the booking says "freight includes loading and unloading", assume hamali is extra. Who pays is by agreement. The usual practice is that the sender pays loading hamali and the receiver pays unloading hamali, but a broker may agree to arrange and pay it and bill it on.
The basis is also by agreement and varies by market and goods: a lump sum per truck, a rate per bag or carton, or a rate per ton. We do not quote rates because they are local, and some markets have union or committee rates. Settle the basis and the amount before loading and write it down.
On the bilty and bill, hamali appears as its own line. The Bilty Maker has a loading/hamali charge field and an unloading charge field, and when the broker or driver pays labour in cash on the way, the trip expense can be recorded under the kind "Loading / Hamali". If the transporter arranges the labour and bills it to the customer, it forms part of the amount billed, so it is generally taxed with the freight; confirm the treatment with your CA.
Common disputes: the driver pays hamali out of his own pocket and is not reimbursed; the party refuses to pay because "freight was all-inclusive". Keep the hamali line on the bilty and keep the labour receipt.
| Line | What it covers | Usually paid by |
|---|---|---|
| Loading hamali | Lifting goods onto the truck at origin | Consignor, or as agreed |
| Unloading hamali | Taking goods off the truck at destination | Consignee, or as agreed |
| Basis: per bag, per ton or lump sum | How the amount is worked out | Fixed in the booking |
Practical Indian Freight Example
"For illustration: a broker books a truck of 400 cement bags. The booking says freight ₹30,000 plus loading hamali at the factory paid by the consignor and unloading hamali at the shop paid by the consignee, both at an agreed rate per bag. On the bilty, the two hamali amounts are separate lines under the freight."
