RC (Vehicle Registration Certificate)
Also searched as: RC full form truck · registration certificate vehicle · truck number · vehicle RC
RC is the Registration Certificate of a vehicle, issued by the RTO. It records the registration number (the number plate), the owner's name, chassis and engine numbers, vehicle class, laden and unladen weight and the date of registration. A vehicle cannot lawfully run on a public road without a valid RC.
Detailed Explanation & Statutory Rules
For a truck, the RC is the first document everything else hangs on. The registration number printed on it is the vehicle number entered in the bilty and the e-way bill, so a typing error causes mismatches at checkpoints. The RC names the owner, so lorry hire, TDS declarations and insurance all need to match that name. Keep a copy of the RC with the driver and a scan in the office. A transfer of ownership must be recorded with the RTO. The RC is not a licence to carry goods across states; that is the permit, covered on the national permit page.
Practical Indian Freight Example
"A truck registered as GJ 05 AB 1234 is entered in the bilty as GJ05AB1234 and the same string in the e-way bill. The driver carries an RC copy. At a checkpoint the officer matches the vehicle number on the e-way bill, the bilty and the RC; all three agree and the truck moves on."
