A truck owner (lorry owner) is the person who owns one or more goods vehicles and earns lorry hire for carrying goods, usually through a broker or transporter. The owner is the person named on the vehicle's registration certificate. Small owners often own fewer than ten trucks.

Detailed Explanation & Statutory Rules

A truck owner's income is the hire for each trip minus diesel, toll, driver pay, repairs, EMI, insurance and permits. Owners depend on brokers for loads, so the advance, the balance and the date of the balance are the most important things on the hire slip. Owners keep the vehicle documents valid: registration certificate, insurance, fitness, permit and pollution certificate. Two tax points matter: TDS may be deducted from the hire paid to the owner, and an owner with at most ten goods carriages can give a declaration with PAN to avoid TDS, and may opt for presumptive taxation.
