GVW & Unladen Weight

Also searched as: GVW full form · gross vehicle weight truck · unladen weight · ULW truck · truck payload

Direct Definition

GVW is the gross vehicle weight: the maximum total weight of the truck including its load, fixed by the manufacturer and recorded on the RC. Unladen weight (ULW) is the weight of the empty truck. The difference is roughly the load the truck is designed to carry.

Detailed Explanation & Statutory Rules

Loading beyond GVW is overloading, and it is penalised under the Motor Vehicles Act. The practical payload is GVW minus the unladen weight, minus allowance for fuel, driver and fittings. GVW is also used by the tax rules: for the presumptive scheme on goods carriages, a heavy goods vehicle is one with gross vehicle weight over 12,000 kg and its taxable amount is worked out per ton of GVW. Look at the RC for the registered GVW and ULW, and compare with the weighbridge slip when a load looks heavy.

Legal Reference / Act: Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, section 2 (definitions of gross vehicle weight and unladen weight) and section 113 (limits of weight).

Practical Indian Freight Example

"A truck's RC shows GVW 25,000 kg and unladen weight 9,000 kg. The design payload is about 16,000 kg. A loaded weighbridge slip showing 27,500 kg gross means the truck is carrying about 2,500 kg beyond its limit and is overloaded."
