Consignor vs Consignee

Also searched as: consignor and consignee · consignor vs consignee · consignor meaning · consignee meaning · consigner · consignor copy · consignee copy · consignor consignee difference · consignor meaning in punjabi

Direct Definition

The consignor is the person who sends the goods; the consignee is the person who receives them. In Hindi, consignor means माल भेजने वाला and consignee means माल पाने वाला. Both are named on the bilty, and the transporter delivers the goods to the consignee.

Detailed Explanation & Statutory Rules

The two words always come as a pair on a bilty. The consignor (also written consigner) is the sender, the person or company from whose place the goods are picked up. The consignee is the receiver, the person or company the goods are addressed to and who takes delivery. Neither word means the driver, the truck owner or the transporter.

The consignor is not always the one who pays, and the consignee is not always the buyer in the commercial sense. Who pays the freight is a separate term on the bilty (see To Pay, Paid and TBB). The party who is billed for freight and the party who bears GST can be the consignor, the consignee or the transporter, and the bilty states which.

Name, address and GSTIN of both must be on the bilty. They decide where the goods are delivered, who signs the proof of delivery, and, together with the places of origin and destination, which GST applies (CGST and SGST, or IGST).

Copies of a bilty: the consignor copy goes back to the sender as proof that the goods were handed over; the consignee copy goes to the receiver and is what they show to take delivery; the driver copy travels with the truck along with the e-way bill; the office copy stays with the transporter for billing and accounts. "Consignor copy" searches usually mean the first of these.

Consignor and consigner are the same word. Do not mix the two up on a document: reversing them changes who is entitled to delivery.

The consignor copy returns to Vapi, the consignee copy is shown in Pune to take delivery, the driver copy rides in the cabin, and the office copy goes to the transporter's accounts."
