LR / GR (Lorry Receipt / Goods Receipt)
Also searched as: LR full form in transport · GR full form in transport · lorry receipt · goods receipt · LR number · GR number
LR means Lorry Receipt and GR means Goods Receipt. Both are other names for a bilty: the document a transporter issues when it accepts goods for road transport. Which name is used depends on the region and the transporter. The content is the same: consignor, consignee, goods, vehicle and freight terms.
Detailed Explanation & Statutory Rules
LR, GR and bilty are three names for one document. "LR number" or "GR number" is the serial number printed on it, which is how the consignment is quoted in calls, accounts and proof of delivery.
When goods are received, the transporter writes the number of packages, the weight and the condition of the goods. A remark such as "said to contain" means the transporter has noted the contents as declared by the sender without opening the packages. Any remark about damaged packing should be written on the LR at loading, not later, because it is the first record if a claim is made. See the bilty page for the full layout, the copies and how to make one.
Practical Indian Freight Example
"A transporter in Ludhiana loads 120 cartons of hosiery for Kolkata. The LR (number LDH-26-0311) records 120 cartons, "said to contain hosiery", and notes "two cartons wet" at loading. That note is what the transporter points to if the consignee later claims damage."
