E-Challan (Traffic Fine)
Also searched as: e challan truck · e-challan meaning · traffic challan truck · challan check vehicle number
An e-challan is a traffic fine issued electronically to the registered owner of a vehicle for a violation caught by camera, a handheld device or an officer, such as overloading, over-speeding, no valid documents or a lapsed PUC. It is sent by SMS or posted online and is paid online or at court. It is not the GST delivery challan.
Detailed Explanation & Statutory Rules
The e-challan goes to the owner registered on the RC, not to the driver or the party who booked the truck, so owners should keep their registered mobile number current. Check pending challans on the official transport portal for each truck before buying or taking on a truck, and settle them promptly because unpaid challans can block renewals and transfers of the vehicle. Common truck e-challans are for overloading, missing or expired PUC, fitness or permit, and lane or speed violations. Fines are by law and change with amendments, so refer to the official schedule. Brokers and owners should agree who bears fines caused by the driver or by the party's overloading.
Practical Indian Freight Example
"A truck registered to an owner in Surat is photographed overloaded at a weighbridge in Rajasthan. An e-challan SMS arrives on the owner's registered number. He pays it on the official portal, and recovers the amount from the broker as agreed in the hire slip, since the party had overloaded the truck."
